Ten tips to make your PowerPoint slides more effective

Learn how to step up your game from our experience.

PowerPoint is a powerful tool that can be used to create effective presentations. However, if you're not careful, your slides can end up being cluttered, boring, and ineffective.

Enter Kennedy, one of our PowerPoint design experts who has successfully crafted over 600 PowerPoint decks for our clients over the past five years. With his wealth of experience, he knows what it takes to create slides that will truly captivate your audience and communicate your message effectively.

So, without further ado, here are Kennedy's top ten tips for creating truly effective PowerPoint presentations.

1. Consistency is key

Use a consistent colour palette, font, and style throughout your presentation. This will help your slides look professional and polished.

2. Use two colours at most

Using too many colours for your body text can be overwhelming and distracting. Stick to two colours at most—using one colour as your primary colour and the other as an accent colour.

3. Engage with high-quality visuals

Poor-quality visuals will make your presentation look unprofessional and will distract your audience. Make sure your images and diagrams are clear, concise, and relevant to your message.

4. Embrace white space

White space is not wasted space. It can help make your slides more attractive and easier to read. Use white space to create a sense of balance and to accentuate hierarchy on your slides.

5. Use animations and transitions sparingly

Animations and transitions can be a great way to add interest to your presentation, but they can also be distracting. Use them sparingly and make sure they are relevant to your message.

6. Proofread your slides carefully

Typos and grammatical errors will make you look unprofissional (…see? 😉). Take the time to proofread your slides carefully before you present them.

7. Avoid using the ‘compress image’ button

Compressing images can reduce their quality dramatically. Instead, resize your images to fit your slides.

8. Less text, more impact

If you have a lot of content to cover, it's better to split it across multiple slides than to cram it all onto one slide. This will make your slides easier to read and understand.

9. Use a template

Well-designed templates are a great base to help you create professional-looking slides quickly and easily. (Ask us if you need help 😉)

10. Most importantly, keep it simple

The simpler your slides are, the more effective they will be. Don't overload your slides with text or visuals. Instead, focus on highlighting the key points of your message.

Following these tips will help you create PowerPoint slides that are more effective and engaging. So next time you are preparing a presentation, remember to keep it simple, consistent, and visually appealing.
